Do you work from home or have you ever worked from home? I would like to give you the good and bad points of working from home as I’ve done both. And now I’m working from home again even though I’m retired.
What to do
When I was first divorced and looking for work, because I knew that with four kids, I needed to earn extra money to get by. To complicate the situation I had a handicapped or as they say today, challenged daughter.
So I wasn’t sure what I could do or who would watch her. That was a while ago and there was not as much available for help and training for children with challenges as there is today. So to make a long story short, I became a hairdresser and converted my garage into a hair salon so I could work at home to care for her.
And that was my first experience with working from home. It certainly had it’s good points, but some downsides also.
Take advantage of the internet
Now we have instant access to the internet and everything it has to offer, so working at home is much easier. So you can do some research and you can find many opportunities to allow you to work from home, without much investment.
If you currently have employment, sometimes you are allowed to work out of your home, so check that out, even if it part-time.
The good, the bad and the ugly
What are the pros of working out of your home on the internet?
- You can work whenever you want, early in the day or late at night.
- You don’t have to dress up for work, you can work in your pajamas.
- You can watch your children.
- You can work from anywhere if all you need is a computer and an internet connection.
- No commuting and fighting traffic.
- Save money on buying lunches.
- No snow days, which can be good or bad.
- Save money on nice clothes for work. (which can be very expensive)
The cons of working from home…
- Being motivated, sometimes that’s a hard thing to do, to work when you don’t feel up to it.
- Not letting everyday household chores interfere with work.
- Not socializing with co-workers.
- Being a workaholics.
- Not having a designated space to work. I know I need organization to work well.
- Not letting family distract you from your projects, except when really necessary.
Working from home takes a balance between working too much to not working enough. I know when I first worked at home and I didn’t have any business, I would decide to tackle big projects in my house, and if I received a call for a hair appointment, my project would have to wait.
But that was not working with a computer. I was dealing with people and appointments. Now I’m retired and I do affiliate marketing to supplement our income. I try to have set hours to work, also there is just myself and my husband. No small children and their many needs.
In the evening I write out my schedule for what I want to accomplished the next day, so when I get in front of my computer the next day I’m focused on what I have to do.
I try to put in a set number of hours each day, with one day off a week. It’s so easy to get sidetracked and I find this helps me stay on track.
I also have a certain amount of hours I want to work and I try very hard to stick to that, in fact I usually do more hours. Which can be a good or bad thing depending on how you spend your time. And be careful of social media, that can eat up a lot of time.
Be careful of email and shiny objects, I try to check my emails only once a day and I follow a couple of blogs related to my work and discard the rest.
It’s easy to get bogged down into needless chores that do not help you grow your business. The “next shiny new object”, You could spend precious time better spent growing your business and getting some articles written, some training done. Write a blog for WA. Follow some more lessons. There are many small tasks that need doing that we are all guilty of pushing aside.
I recently watched a YouTube video about a man who had been dabbling in the make money online for a couple of years. He had jumped from one shiny object to another without any success. Finally, he said one day. I am going to make this work and I am going to take MASSIVE action. He is now a millionaire. Just a regular guy but decided to take MASSIVE action. So guess what, I am now going to take MASSIVE action. Have been stumbling around this training for a couple of years, not including the amount of time before I found a legit program to work with. Always looking for the new shiny object.
That’s why working from home is hard. You don’t have a boss to be accountable to. So you have to really be self-motivated. And that can sometimes be very hard.
